Project Description

A Taiwan plant of a well-known U.S. induction furnace manufacturer needed a cooling tower for its high-frequency induction furnaces, but the tower's location was already fixed and the available space was tight. Linkcooling recommended the SCT series narrow-aisle closed-loop cooling tower. Two low-profile SCT-30 units in parallel and one taller SCT-60 were both considered, and the customer chose a single SCT-60. The tower was assembled and test-run quickly on site, built from 304 stainless steel and reusable ABS fill made in Taiwan with supporting documents, and fitted with a custom remote control box for precise cooling-time control.

Key Issues Diagnosis

Limited Space and a Fixed Cooling Tower Location

The first challenge was where the cooling tower could go. The tower's position was already decided, so the new tower had to use the available space as efficiently as possible. Flexible design therefore mattered more than anything else when selecting equipment. Many towers sold abroad are long, low units, which suit narrow or unusual spaces, and this project called for the same approach.

Short Installation and Commissioning Window

For any production equipment, shorter installation and commissioning time means a faster start to production. The customer needed the tower on site, connected and tested with as little delay as possible.

Strict Cooling-Time Control for High-Frequency Induction Furnaces

Cooling-time control for a high-frequency induction furnace is strict, and a standard control system could not meet it. The customer needed a controller that could hold water temperature changes and cooling time to a set target, and that could be monitored and adjusted remotely.

Why Choose Linkcooling for Induction Furnace Cooling

The customer's plant in Taiwan had four priorities: a tower design flexible enough for a fixed, limited location, fast and dependable installation, Taiwan-made materials and parts with proof documents, and a control system that could meet strict cooling-time requirements. Linkcooling's closed-loop cooling towers were chosen because each of these could be met in one project, from site planning and tower selection through testing and commissioning. Solution: SCT-60 Narrow-Aisle Closed-Loop Cooling Tower

Linkcooling recommended its SCT series narrow-aisle design, which suits tight sites and improves cooling efficiency. The SCT series is built with 1.0 m and 1.5 m rectangular chassis options for installation corridors of 1.5 m to 2.0 m, so it can use leftover space that a conventional tower cannot.

Two layouts were compared in the early planning stage. Both give the same rated capacity at the SCT design conditions (inlet water 38°C, wet-bulb 27°C).

Option Layout Rated capacity Unit size (L × W × H)
A: Low-profile parallel 2 × SCT-30 in parallel 2 × 90,000 = 180,000 Kcal/h 1,750 × 950 × 2,480 mm each
B: Single unit (chosen) 1 × SCT-60 180,000 Kcal/h 2,120 × 1,450 × 3,320 mm

Choosing between parallel low-profile units and one taller unit depends on available footprint, height limits and how much backup you need. A single tower on its own does not provide redundancy; if you need it, multiple units can run in parallel with built-in backup. To size a tower for your own equipment, see our guides on calculating heat load and selecting the right cooling tower size and how to calculate the cooling capability your equipment needs.

Design Features

Fast Assembly and Test Run

Linkcooling's team assembled the tower on site quickly and accurately, which shortened installation and commissioning time. The tower was then brought into the plant and test-run. The team confirmed the expected cooling result, made small adjustments where needed, and completed the test run. A cooling-efficiency test was also arranged at a CTI test area, so performance could be checked before the tower went into regular service. Linkcooling's CTI cooling tower certification applies to the HCT-J series; the SCT series is not a CTI-certified model.

Made-in-Taiwan Materials and Parts

The customer's Taiwan plant specifically asked for Taiwan-made materials and parts. They suit Taiwan's climate and can lower later maintenance cost. Linkcooling supplied the supporting proof documents with the tower.

Custom Remote Control Box for Cooling-Time Control

Linkcooling designed a custom remote control box for this project. It controls cooling water temperature changes and makes sure the cooling time reaches its target. The customer can also monitor and adjust the cooling system remotely in real time, which makes operation easier and fits the precision that induction furnace production needs.

Linkcooling One-Stop Test-Run Process

To make sure every tower runs efficiently from day one, Linkcooling's engineering team follows one process from planning to on-site acceptance.

Step What happens
1. Selection planning The team plans the system around your needs and site, whether that is a low-profile parallel layout or a single unit.
2. In-factory coil test The coil is tested at the factory to confirm cooling performance and stable operation under long, heavy loads.
3. In-factory test run A full test run simulates real operating conditions and allows fine adjustments before shipping.
4. Delivery and installation The tower is delivered safely and installed accurately, ready for piping and electrical work.
5. Power and piping Electrical and piping connections are made and adjusted to match the existing facility.
6. On-site acceptance The team confirms the tower meets its design parameters and monitors the first operation, adjusting where needed.

Why Closed-Loop Cooling Towers Suit Induction Furnaces

Induction furnaces turn a share of their electrical power into heat in the coils, power supply and cables, and that heat has to be removed continuously. A closed circuit cooling tower keeps the water that runs through your equipment in a sealed loop, away from outside air, dust and evaporation. Minerals concentrate only in the separate outer spray loop, so the equipment-side water stays clean. This is the idea behind the scale-free closed cooling system, and it matters because limescale reduces heat exchange and raises power consumption. For a comparison of the two approaches, read closed vs. general cooling systems.

The outer spray loop still uses and loses some water, so the tower needs routine care and water management. Cooling capacity at any site also depends on local conditions, including wet-bulb temperature.

Project Results

This project shows how a closed-loop cooling tower can be matched to a hard site. Space, installation time, local materials and cooling-time control each shaped the design, and Linkcooling's narrow-aisle SCT-60, quick assembly, Taiwan-made materials and custom remote control box addressed each one.
